Tragic Macon County Crash Kills Two

February 26, 2020

MACON COUNTY, GA- writes that a crash in Macon County killed two people this week. The incident occurred on Georgia 49 in the early afternoon. According to reports from the Georgia State Patrol, two individuals were in a Honda Accord and driving northbound when the driver lost control and crossed the center line.*

The Honda entered oncoming traffic where it collided with an Isuzu box truck. The larger vehicle struck the Honda on its side and split the sedan in half. The front of the vehicle ended up in the roadway while the rear flew into a nearby ditch. The passenger in the car, a twenty-year-old woman from Forest Park, died at the scene of the wreck. The driver, 22-year-old man was thrown from the car and died a short while after the wreck at the Perry Hospital. Reports did not indicate whether the driver in the truck sustained injuries.

When it comes to cars crossing the center line on the road, it is important to note that this can occur in an instant with a driver who is distracted. Distracted driving has become a major contributing factor in many collisions, and in most cases, the culprit is a cellphone. Many cars now come with screens that make it possible to use the device’s features hands-free, but even these can be problematic. In fact, driving while talking on the phone, even on a speaker, causes motorists to miss about 50 percent of their environment. Using talk to text is also problematic, and the AAA found that drivers are not only distracted while sending a message but that they remain distracted another 27 seconds after sending a voice to text message.
