Several Injured in School Bus Crash in Decatur County, Georgia

February 27, 2020

DECATUR COUNTY, GA- writes that a Decatur County school bus was involved in a collision with a pickup truck. The authorities say that about five or six people, all of whom were in the truck at the time, were injured in the wreck.*

The bus was transporting students home from school at the time of the mid-afternoon collision. None of the students on the bus were injured, nor was the bus driver. Police have not stated the cause of the wreck.

Images from the scene show damage to the front end of the bus. The pickup truck, which reportedly rolled over in the collision, sustained severe damage to its passenger side in the middle and rear of the vehicle. Children’s car seats can be seen in the back seat of the truck.

The identities of the victims and their conditions were not included in the report. School buses are considered safer than all other vehicles on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the chances of a student getting to or from their school safely are about 70 times greater when the children ride a school bus as opposed to traveling in a passenger vehicle.

Regulations specific to school buses require that they meet stringent safety standards. Additionally, buses are painted bright yellow and have flashing lights to make them more apparent to others on the road. Laws surrounding these vehicles dictate that drivers are not permitted to pass them when they are dropping students off or picking them up. Despite the efforts to make these buses as safe as possible, they are sometimes involved in collisions, and occasionally students are injured.
