GDOT Adds Rumble Strips in Effort to Prevent Distracted Driving
WHITE, GEORGIA - Rumble strips are being added to roadways throughout Georgia in an effort to prevent distracted driving. Statistics indicate that about 55 percent of fatalities in the state in 2018 were the result of drivers failing to stay in correct lanes. Officials believe that distracted driving is likely the cause of many of these incidents.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) uses rumble strips on the center and the shoulder of the road in order to prevent drivers from leaving their lanes. The strips prevent fatal collisions and save lives. A local engineer stated that crashes involving drivers entering the shoulder or crossing the center line declined after rumble strips were added. Rumble strips are just one of the tools road designers can use to increase road safety.
According to the Governor’s Office for Highway Safety, the number of vehicle occupants who tragically died in car crashes declined in 2018 when compared to 2017. Many officials believe the reason for the decline in traffic related fatalities is largely due to the state’s hands-free law, which went into effect in 2018. The law is one other way that the state is working to prevent distracted driving-related collisions.
