Toddler Killed in Tragic Pedestrian Crash in Manatee County, Florida

February 23, 2020

PALMETTO, FL- writes that a 23-month-old child was struck by a car late in the morning this week. The incident occurred when the child entered 69th Street East in Palmetto. Police believe that the victim was staying with her grandparents when the tragic incident occurred. Reports indicate that she was by herself when she ran into the road. The car that struck the girl was a Chevrolet Equinox. The motorist remained at the scene of the crash. *

Deadly pedestrian collisions are becoming more frequent around the United States. These horrible tragedies continue to increase even as the number of people killed as vehicle occupants are dropping year after year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that 6,283 people died in pedestrian wrecks in 2018, making it the deadliest year for pedestrian collisions since 1991. As compared to 2017, 2018 saw a three percent increase in these tragic crashes.

Both pedestrians and drivers are responsible for preventing these types of collisions. The NHTSA tells pedestrians to stay predictable and follow the rules of the road. Never walk in the street when there is a sidewalk available and use crosswalks when possible rather than crossing in other locations.

Drivers are instructed not to speed as this can lead to dangerous scenarios because it gives motorists less time to react and leads to more severe injuries.

Motorists should always slow down when they are driving in locations where children might be present as children make unpredictable moves.
