Mother and Sister of Marine Die in Wreck On their Way to Boot Camp Graduation
VIRGINIA- Marinecorpstimes.com writes that the mother and sister of Marine were killed in a collision on Interstate 95 in Virginia while driving to the Marine’s boot camp graduation in South Carolina.*
The incident took place when the 57-year-old mother’s car broke down on the interstate. The vehicle was then struck by a semi-truck killing the woman and a thirteen-year-old girl who had been in the front seat of the car. A friend of the family was also in the car at the time and suffered injuries in the crash. The trucker was injured as well.
The Marine spokesperson expressed condolences to the Private and her family and offered to support her through a difficult time. A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family to help them bring the remains of the mother and daughter home to Pennsylvania and pay funeral expenses.
Breakdowns on major roads are a frightening occurrence. Vehicles are moving at high rates of speed, and drivers often strike even vehicles pulled to the side of the highway. Of course, drivers are responsible for avoiding collisions with disabled cars on the road. If a motorist slows or stops in an emergency and is struck by a car behind them, the rear driver will often be at fault. Even if drivers stop unexpectedly, motorists are required to leave enough space between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them so that it is possible to stop without striking the front car.
In the case of trucks, these vehicles require long stopping distances. Trucks take between twenty and 40 times as far as to come to a complete stop as passenger vehicles.
