Ocala Intersection Gets Traffic Light at Site of Deadly Collision
OCALA, FL- Ocala.com writes that a traffic light was installed at an intersection in Ocala. The light is controlling the intersection of Northeast 30th Avenue and Northeast 14th Street. In December of 2017, two teenage girls died in a wreck at the intersection.*
The victims were a fifteen-year-old girl and a seventeen-year-old girl who were traveling to a recital during the afternoon. One of the girls’ fathers has worked to get the light installed in the intersection. Members of both girls’ families have been working to urge the city to make the intersection safer in the wake of the tragic incident.
The initiative started with a petition on Change.org. After acquiring 5,300 signatures, the fifteen-year-old girl’s father when to the City Council. The petition continued to gain signatures and eventually reached over 6,100. According to safety advocates, before the light was installed, vehicles traveling through the crossroads were placed in a dangerous situation. The project manager installing the light invited one of the victims’ mothers to flip the switch to activate the traffic signal. The project manager stated that the construction took three months and said that at that time, she saw several near-accidents occur and many drivers speeding in the area.
The father who pushed the project forward stated that completing the project felt bittersweet and that it will save lives. According to one report, there have been twelve collisions at the intersection within the last five years. A memorial and a bench now stand at the location where the girls tragically died. The families said that that a plaque will be placed next to the light.
