Crash on Interstate 75 Injures Three in North Port, Florida

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL- Nbc-2.com writes that three people suffered injuries in a wreck on Interstate 75 close to Kings Highway. The incident took place overnight when a 46-year-old man driving a truck lost control of his vehicle. The semi reportedly began to hydroplane and then crashed into a guard rail. The truck then returned to the road where it drifted across two lanes and into a third where another truck was traveling. The second truck, which was being operated by a 53-year-old man, struck the right side of the other truck and then collided with a guardrail.*

Prior to the second truck striking the first, a 50-year-old man tried to assist the driver in the first truck. All three men sustained injuries in the collision. Responders transported the two injured drivers to SMH North Port while the other individual was rushed to the Fawcett Hospital. The crash is still under investigation, but reports indicate that charges are pending. The wreck closed down the interstate for several hours while responders worked to clear the scene. Large truck crashes are occurring more often in the United States each year. While fatal passenger vehicle collisions are on the decline, crashes involving large trucks continue to increase. 

Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) state that the reason fewer people are dying in car crashes has to do with improvements to crash prevention technology. Many drivers have the benefit of systems that will warn them if they approach another vehicle too fast, or if a vehicle is approaching in their blind spot. These systems appear to be effective in cutting down on crashes. Large trucks may someday benefit from the same technology.
