Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Tallahassee, Florida
TALLAHASSEE, FL- Tallahassee.com writes that a pedestrian is in the hospital following a crash that took place in Tallahassee earlier this week. Reports indicate that the nineteen-year-old victim was attempting to cross the street when he was struck by a car.*
The police report stated that the man was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision. Responders were called to the scene, which was located not far from the Florida State campus, at the intersection of St. Augustine Street and Gay Street. The victim was conscious when responders arrived at the scene and were transported to the hospital with injuries to his right leg. Reports indicate that the driver was at fault for the incident, but the investigation is still underway. The motorist’s identity has not yet been released. Some reports indicated that the victim is a freshman at Florida State University.
Another recent pedestrian crash in the area killed a nineteen-year-old female student on West Tennessee Street. In that incident, the driver, a 24-year-old woman, drove through a stoplight and entered the crosswalk. The driver in the earlier incident was issued a citation.
Florida has a poor record when it comes to fatal pedestrian crashes. The state is considered the worst in the nation for these types of collisions. Efforts to increase pedestrian safety are underway in many parts of the country as the number of people to die in these wrecks continues to climb. In Florida, many argue the roads are not made for foot traffic and cyclists but are designed to encourage fast-moving vehicle traffic. The state’s traffic laws have also faced criticism for not addressing many road safety issues.
