One Killed in Tragic Interstate 20 Crash in Rockdale County, Georgia

February 10, 2020

ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA- writes that a motorist died in a car crash over the weekend in Rockdale County. The incident occurred on Interstate 20 in the early afternoon. Reports indicate that a 40-year-old man operating a Nissan Rogue on Royal Driver ran through a stop sign, crossed over a guardrail and through a fence, and then entered the interstate.*

Police state that the Nissan then collided with an eastbound Toyota Camry. The 52-year-old man driving the Camry died in the wreck. The Georgia State Patrol is working on accident reconstruction and investigation to determine what led up to the fatal crash. The man driving the Nissan is now facing charges, but the actual counts will depend on the outcome of the investigation. The man driving the Nissan also suffered injuries in the collision and was transported to the Grady Memorial Hospital. The injuries and conditions of the surviving driver are not yet known. After the collision, the eastbound lanes of the interstate remained closed while crews worked to investigate and clear the wreckage. Drivers in the area were diverted onto Covington Highway for several hours.

Georgia is working to reduce the number of vehicle collision fatalities on its roads. Despite efforts, including a 2018 ban on driving with a handheld electronic device, the state ranks fourteenth in the country when it comes to deadly wrecks. The many rural roadways in the state could be part of the reason for the high number of collisions. While the results for the state are not great, residents in Georgia are making at least one good decision- the state’s seatbelt usage rates are at 97 percent.
