Tragic Pedestrian Crash Kills Woman from Middletown

February 09, 2020

MIDDLETOWN, RI- writes that a woman and a man were struck by a vehicle while in their yards over the weekend in Middletown. The incident took place when a driver operating a 2011 Jeep Cherokee was backing out of a driveway located at 46 Ward Ave. The motorist backed across the street and drove into the yard of the house located at 47 Ward Ave. where she collided with two people.*

One of the pedestrians was an 80-year-old woman who died at the scene of the collision. The other was a man who appears to have been related to the driver. Some reports indicate that the surviving victim was the motorist’s son. Police say that the vehicle finally stopped when it collided with the porch at the victim’s home. One witness heard the sound of the impact and ran outside to offer assistance. Responders arrived at the scene and attempted to revive the woman, but she was declared dead at the scene. The male victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

An accident reconstruction team was sent to the site and worked into the evening to determine what had caused the tragic wreck. It is not yet clear whether the driver is facing charges for her role in the fatal crash. The reconstruction and investigation are still underway. Neighbors spoke highly of the victims and said that the woman often was in her yard gardening.

Driveway accidents often occur when motorists are backing up and fail to see people behind their car. These incidents typically put children at risk. By law, all vehicles now must come equipped with rear backup cameras, which greatly reduce the blind spot behind vehicles.
