Tragic Crash on Interstate 75 Kills One in Gibsonton, Florida

February 09, 2020

GIBSONTON, FL- writes that a man died in a tragic car crash in Gibsonton last weekend. The victim, identified as a 50-year-old man, was killed when he lost control of his vehicle in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75.*

The driver was traveling south in a Cadillac Escalade when the cars in front of him slowed down in congested traffic. The victim did not slow soon enough, and in an attempt to avoid striking the other vehicles, he hit a concrete median. Responders declared the man dead at the scene of the crash. No other cars were involved in the wreck. The southbound lanes were shut down for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Inattentive driving is a common cause of car crashes. Statistics indicate that about 1.7 million rear-end collisions take place in the United States each year. These incidents are typically the result of a driver failing to see the cars ahead of him or her slow down. Distracted driving, including using a cell phone, is often the reason for these wrecks.

Current vehicle technology is capable of drastically reducing the chances of these kinds of incidents taking place. Cars with collision avoidance systems are able to warn drivers when they are approaching traffic or objects too fast, and some cars even have automatic brakes that can engage when a driver fails to stop in time. Thousands of crashes could be prevented each year if such systems were standard in all passenger cars.

So far, such technology is making an impact on the number of fatal crashes each year. However, this type of technology is not yet in most of the cars on the road.
