Truck Crash Reported on Turnpike in Sandusky County

February 09, 2020

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH - writes that a man is now in the hospital following a collision between two trucks on the Ohio Turnpike. The incident occurred over the weekend when the driver of a tractor-trailer left the road and struck a commercial vehicle that was stopped at the time. The crash took place in the morning in the westbound lanes in Riley Township.*

Police reported that the driver, a 47-year-old man from Rockford, Illinois was operating a 2000 Volvo truck that was carrying a load of grapes. For unknown reasons, the driver drifted onto the shoulder where another disables tractor-trailer was stopped. The driver was stuck inside the cab of his truck following the impact. Emergency responders worked to extract the victim for about an hour. The man was then transported to the Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center, where his injuries were reported as being life-threatening. A married couple was in the disabled 2017 Freightliner that was struck from behind. Neither person in that vehicle suffered injuries in the collision. The Freightliner, which was transporting perishable meat products, was parked with DOT approved triangles marking their presence. The two large trucks were both later towed from the scene of the crash. Traffic in the westbound lanes was delayed due to the lane closures in the area.

While occupants in passenger cars are dying in smaller numbers, crashes involving large trucks are continuing to increase each year. The reason for the increase in large truck crashes is not well understood, but it appears that other vehicles are becoming less likely to be involved in wrecks because of crash avoidance technology.
