Pueblo Collision Kills One, Injures One

February 03, 2020

PUEBLO, CO- writes that a crash killed one on Interstate 25 earlier this week near Pueblo, Colorado. The incident took place in the afternoon in the northbound lanes. Reports indicate that a 55-year-old woman sustained injuries in the accident and has been hospitalized.*

The authorities closed the highway until the evening while the investigation was being carried out. At least one vehicle caught fire in the collision.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatal car accidents around the country has continued to decline each year. The NHTSA attributes the lower numbers to better technology in new vehicles. Modern cars are coming equipped with systems that alert drivers to many dangers on the road. By warning drivers of vehicles in their blind spots or when they are approaching a car too fast, these systems are able to help motorists avoid crashes that might have led to deadly results.

As these systems progress, and as more cars on the road have such technology, the number of crashes may drop further still. Sadly, the benefits are still not impacting the number of fatal collisions involving large trucks, pedestrians, and cyclists. With more than 35 thousand people dying annually in car accidents, there is a lot of room for improvement.

Of course, cars are not fully autonomous yet, and many of these systems rely on drivers to react in an emergency. Attentive and alert motorists are still necessary to keep the roads safe. Drivers can avoid most crashes by traveling at a safe speed, paying attention, and never getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
