Deadly Wreck Tragically Kills Two on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County

January 31, 2020

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA- writes that a deadly accident took place in Gwinnett County late last week. The incident occurred in the early morning when four vehicles, involving two passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers collided.*

Reports indicate that the crash occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the Lawrenceville-Suwanne Road exit. According to officials, the crash killed two people. The authorities shut down the road while they worked to investigate and clear the scene. Police recommended that drivers avoid the area.

Large trucks are often involved in fatal crashes because of their massive weight and size. Trucks are difficult to maneuver, and when they strike a smaller vehicle, the results are often deadly. Tractor-trailers are higher off of the ground than other vehicles, which can mean that smaller cars will become wedged beneath the trucks in deadly underride collisions.

Other issues involving these large vehicles include the fact that large trucks are difficult to operate. Drivers cannot stop quickly in the event of an emergency, nor can they swerve without risking jackknifing or overturning. Drivers who operate these vehicles are also frequently on the road for long stretches of time. The law permits drivers to travel in stretches of up to eleven hours. While drivers can travel for eleven hours, the risk of them being involved in a crash increases when they take on these longer travel times. It is difficult for anyone to maintain focus for so many hours behind the wheel. It is important for anyone driving in the presence of large trucks to maintain a safe distance from those vehicles and never to cut-off or stop short in front of a truck.
