Pedestrian Dies in Tragic Crash near Fort Belvoir on Richmond Highway

January 23, 2020

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA- writes that two vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian in Fairfax County earlier this week. The incident occurred in the Northbound lanes on Richmond Highway close to Fort Belvoir.*

A 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with the victim first, followed by a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am. According to police, the victim was not in a crosswalk when the incident occurred. The driver operating the pickup truck stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the police and the investigation. The motorist operating the Grand Am left the scene but later contacted police. Reports indicate the second driver did not initially know that they struck a person. The authorities have not yet released the name of the victim and are still attempting to contact the man’s family.

Following the tragic incident, the northbound lanes remained closed for several hours while the police investigated and reconstructed the scene. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to report to contact the police. Just one week prior to this collision, another pedestrian died on Richmond Highway. The earlier victim, a 51-year-old woman, tragically died in the hospital after being struck close to the intersection with South Kings Highway. Only two people died on Richmond Highway last year, and now two have died within less than three weeks of the start of the new year.
