Macon Performs Poorly in Worst Cities for Pedestrians

January 23, 2020

MACON, GA- Macon.com writes that a recent report ranked the 200 largest cities in the country by pedestrian danger.  Macon came in tenth, indicating the city has a much higher than average rate of deadly pedestrian crashes.*

In 2017, the city’s rate of fatal pedestrian accidents was 4.4 per 100,000 people. The national average was 1.7 per 100,000 in the same year. The numbers come at a point in time where the national average is particularly high as well, with a 27 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities.

The researchers looked at the time period between 2013 and 2017 to come up with the rankings. Within the years reported, 34 pedestrians died in the city of Macon with 27,338 fatalities across the nation.

According to the study, most of the fatalities in Macon, and the majority of those in the country, occurred at night. In Macon, 76.5 percent of all deaths took place in low light. Nationally, 76.9 percent occurred in low light conditions, indicating that lighting is a major factor in more than three out of four pedestrian deaths.

Another common factor is alcohol consumption. In about 50 percent of fatal pedestrian incidents nationally, either the pedestrian and/or the driver had consumed alcohol prior to the accident. Many people also believe that smartphone use when behind the wheel is leading to increases in the number of fatal collisions. Between 2010 and 2017, cell phone use quintupled.

Currently, Macon-Bibb County is developing a Vision Zero plan aimed at reducing, and eventually eliminating, all forms of roadway deaths.
