Interstate 85 Business Loop Accident Injures Two in Thomasville, North Carolina

January 19, 2020

THOMASVILLE, writes that a crash on Interstate 85 Business Loop occurred in the afternoon earlier this week. The wreck injured two people.*

According to police, a Honda Accordwas attempting to merge into the northbound lanes on the Business Loop when a Ford F150 struck the Honda on its passenger side. The impact caused both vehicles to enter the northbound traffic lanes.

The drivers both sustained serious injuries, and responders brought the driver of the Honda to the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the driver of the pickup to the Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center.

The police charged the driver of the Honda with a failure to yield.

Images from the scene show a badly damaged black pickup truck with its front end crushed in and buckled.

Studies show the North Carolina is among some of the deadliest states for car crashes. One of the state’s problems is that many people are still not using their seatbelts. Reports indicate that about 61 percent of those who died in wrecks on North Carolina’s roads did not use a seatbelt.

Another issue is speeding, which factored into 40 percent of fatal collisions.

Not only are the roads proving hazardous to people driving, but the number of pedestrians and cyclists dying is also increasing. In Charlotte, only three percent of overall collisions involve people on bikes or walking, and yet these vulnerable road users are the victims in about half of the city’s fatal crashes.

Officials are pushing to start traffic safety initiatives such as Vision Zero programs. These efforts work to address unsafe traffic situations proactively and aim to improve the infrastructure in order to reduce the number of preventable deaths.
