Tragic Collision Kills One on Highway 101 in California

January 18, 2020

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA- writes that a man died in a tragic collision on US Highway 101 at the Indianola Cutoff earlier this week. The victim was identified as a 48-year-old man from Eureka. Reports indicate that the man was driving a 1991 GMC Jimmy and was attempting to turn left onto the Cutoff when a Northbound 2019 GMC Yukon crashed into him. The impact caused the Jimmy to roll over.*

Responders attempted to treat the victim at the scene, but his injuries proved fatal. The other driver was a 42-year-old Indianapolis man traveling with a female passenger from Georgia. According to the news report, the crash was deemed accidental, and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. Officials and locals in the area have been critical of the Indianola Cutoff because a high number of crashes occur on that stretch of road.

Recently, the state began plans to install an undercrossing to remove the need to cross over the highway to get to the exit. The state is spending $70 million to upgrade the infrastructure on Highway 101, including the undercrossing.

Car accident fatalities dropped across the nation recently. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the decline is thanks to better technology in modern vehicles. However, there are still tens of thousands of crash-related deaths every year in the United States. Infrastructure is often a problem, and there are locations across the country that present unreasonable risks to drivers. Changes to infrastructure take time to complete and require large budgets. A recent report indicates that California’s roads are the seventh-worst in the country. Nationally, about 61 percent of highways have been rated either poor or fair.
