Crash in Milton, Florida Kills Cyclist

January 19, 2020

MILTON, FL- writes that a cyclist died in an evening crash earlier this week in Milton. The incident took place at the intersection of Woodbine Road and Fawnwood Drive.*

Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that two vehicles were involved in the wreck. Responders blocked the roads while they carried out the investigation.

Cycling in Florida is known to be a risky activity. The state has some of the most dangerous roads in the nation for both cyclists and pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Florida has a cyclist fatality rate that is 56 percent higher than the second deadliest state in the country for bikers. The top three most dangerous states to ride a bike in are Florida, Texas, and California. Together the top three deadliest states make up 40 percent of all bike fatalities in the United States.

Across the country, the rate of cyclist deaths increased from 2010 to 2016 by 36 percent.

There are many theories about why Florida’s cyclist fatality rate is so comparatively high. The state has a large and dense population which could present more risks of cycling deaths. Another possibility is that there are much older, retired Americans driving in the Sunshine State. Florida is also a popular tourist destination, which means that there are often many people on the road who are not familiar with where they are going. These drivers may be distracted by trying to navigate the unfamiliar roads and therefore be more likely to cause an accident.

The state also performs poorly when it comes to pedestrian safety. The state ranked worst in the nation for pedestrian fatalities.
