Vehicle Strikes cyclist in Savannah, Georgia

January 20, 2020

SAVANNAH, GA- Wtoc.com writes that a car struck a cyclist in Savannah at the intersection of Abercorn Street and East Charleston. The incident occurred in the afternoon earlier this week.*

Reports indicate that a Honda Fit traveling northbound struck an eastbound cyclist at the intersection. The driver was attempting to turn and failed to see the woman.

Police stated that that the victim suffered severe injuries in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim.

Cyclist safety is under question in Savannah, where many residents say that they would like to bike as transportation, but that not every location is accessible by bike and that they do not always feel safe when cycling on the city’s streets.

The number of people biking in the area has increased, but so has the rate of bike-related crashes. Some say that it is frightening to bike around the crowded streets and aggressive drivers.

Only about fifteen percent of the roads in the city have bike lanes. Safety advocates say the only way to keep cyclists safe is to have protected bike lanes that are separated from traffic with a barrier.

The addition of bike lanes has been shown to lower the rate of crashes by about 30 percent. Residents who are committed to changing the city’s bike culture are urging others to speak out and request such improvements. Those in favor of increasing bike lanes remind others that the improvements benefit everyone, not just cyclists. The more people commuting by bike, the less traffic for all road users, and the greener the city becomes.

It is important for Georgia drivers to be aware of road safety issues as well.
