Family Sues Trucking Company and Trucker After Woman Killed by Loose Truck Tire
JONES COUNTY, GA- Macon.com writes that a family is suing a trucking company and the driver of a semi after the truck’s wheel became detached from the trailer and struck a driver through her windshield. The incident occurred last summer when the victim, a 36-year-old woman, was driving an SUV in Interstate 75. The truck’s dislodged tire crossed the median and entered oncoming traffic where it crashed through her windshield and killed the woman.*
The victim’s parents and son were also in the vehicle at the time of the tragic incident. All sustained injuries when the out of control SUV then collided with a concrete barrier.
The allegations in the lawsuit include that the driver failed to properly inspect his trailer leading to the unmaintained vehicle causing the victim’s death. The complaint sounds in negligence and includes the driver’s employer as a defendant.
While the damages claimed are not specific, the complaint includes a prayer for the full value of the victim’s life as well as compensation to the injured and traumatized members of her family who witnessed the mother’s death.
Reports indicate that two tires were disconnected at the same time. It is not clear what caused the trailer to lose its tires.
In the days following the fatal wreck, the driver remained in jail on charges of second-degree vehicular homicide and for operating a defective vehicle. The family is claiming that the trucker and the company displayed a reckless disregard for the safety of others.
The company and driver both declined to comment on the pending lawsuit.
Images from the day of the crash show the vehicle with its windshield completely destroyed on the driver’s side.
