Cyclist Dies in Crash in Lake City, Florida

January 15, 2020

LAKE CITY, FL- writes that a 26-year-old man died in a vehicle versus bike crash over the weekend in the evening. Reports indicate that a Toyota Corolla struck the victim, killing him at the scene.*

Police say that the incident occurred on NW Lake Jeffry Road. The victim was from White Springs.

No charges have been filed against the driver. Officers do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Florida has a poor record when it comes to car accident deaths. More pedestrians die in the state than in any other part of the country, and studies indicate the same is true for cyclists. Not only are more cycling crashes occurring, but when they do happen, they are now more likely to result in death.

The state continues to work on its Complete Streets program, which is dedicated to developing an integrated bike and pedestrian system, and which requires that all new construction consider the impact on cyclist and pedestrian safety.

Complete Streets was initiated in 1984, and yet Florida continues to lead the nation in fatal crashes involving vulnerable road users. Despite the need for a great deal more progress in road safety, proponents of the program argue that it has already saved about 3,500 to 4,000 cyclists from being involved in deadly crashes.

Some of the proposed improvements under the program include installing more bike lanes, sidewalks, larger paved shoulders on the road, curb extensions, medians, improved lighting, bridges for cyclists and pedestrians, and more crosswalks. In 2014, the state announced a renewed commitment to the Complete Streets program. Hopefully, Florida will be able to prevent many of these tragic crashes in the future.
