Hit-and-Run Crash Kills Man in Towson, Maryland

January 15, 2020

TOWSON, MD- writes that a truck hit a 62-year-old man last week and then left the scene. Responders transported the victim to the hospital, where he died several days after the crash. Reports indicate that the man was from Marietta, Georgia.*

The incident occurred at the intersection of Dulaney Valley Road and Fairmont Avenue in the evening. Surveillance footage from the scene indicates that the suspect’s vehicle is a Dodge Ram from between 2013 and 2020.

The pedestrian was in a marked crosswalk when the driver struck him with enough force to send him into the air. After numerous surgeries, the victim died from what appears to have been a blot clot. Police are still searching for information regarding the incident.

In recent studies, the number of hit-and-runs seems to have reached a high point in the United States. In 2016, 2049 people died in the crash. About one out of every five pedestrians killed in a crash die in hit-and-run collisions.

The consequences of fleeing the scene of a crash are severe. Even if a driver did not cause the initial wreck, the penalties for leaving the scene could include prison time and other punishments.

In about 65 percent of incidents, the victims in hit-and-run collisions are pedestrians and cyclists. Most of these incidents occur between the hours of midnight and four in the morning when there are likely few witnesses, and the driver believes that he or she is more likely to be able to escape undetected. The roads are often those with many pedestrians, and with lower speed limits where pedestrians are more inclined to believe that they are safe to cross the road.
