Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Hawkinsville Road in Georgia

January 13, 2020

BIBB COUNTY, GA- writes that a vehicle struck a pedestrian on Hawkinsville Road this week in Bibb County, The incident occurred when the victim, a 40-year-old man, tried to cross the street near the intersection with Allen Road. The man was in the turn lane when a car that was trying to turn left from Hawkinsville Road onto Allen Road collided with him.*

Responders transported the victim to the Medical Center Navicent Health, where his condition was described as stable. Police are still investigating the incident and are requesting that anyone with information contact the sheriff’s office.

Intersections present numerous risks to pedestrian safety. Studies indicate that drivers turning left cause many pedestrian incidents because the motorist does not have a clear view of people crossing on his or her left. Right turns also cause problems when drivers are permitted to make a right turn on red. While pedestrians will have the right-of-way, right-turning drivers often fail to allow pedestrians to cross. The issue presents a point of conflict and can create a situation where people walking are not granted the opportunity to cross the roadway.

Traffic signals are another part of the issue. The walk signal in many places gives too short of an interval for some pedestrians to make it across the road. The traffic control devices are typically programmed to accommodate vehicles, not foot traffic. Roads with many lanes of traffic are an even bigger risk to pedestrians. When four-lane roads are modified to include six or more lanes, the risk of a fatal pedestrian crash increases by around 64 percent. Lighting issues also create dangers. Poorly lit intersections may cause pedestrians to believe they are visible before drivers are able to perceive them, leading to a false sense of security.
