Tragic Crash in Southwest Kansas Kills Woman from Colorado
KANSAS- Kansas.com writes that a woman from Colorado lost her life in a tragic head-on collision in Kansas over the weekend. The incident occurred in the early afternoon when a man from Georgia operating a 2014 Toyota Sienna northbound on US 283 in Ford County veered across the center of the highway and hit a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban that was driving south.*
The SUV then flipped over and rolled into a ditch along the side of the road. The minivan remained on the pavement. Reports indicate that the woman operating the Chevrolet, a 73-year-old from Colorado, was rushed to the Western Plains Medical Complex, where medical practitioners declared her deceased.
The 58-year-old man driving the Sienna also suffered injuries in the crash. Responders transported the man to the same hospital where he received treatment.
Head-on collisions are deadly crashes because they involve intense amounts of force. While vehicles are designed to protect occupants as best as possible in the event of a crash, in reality, there is little an automobile can do to prevent injuries in high-speed collisions. At some point, a large amount of the force will impact the vehicle occupants, even when cars have seatbelts and airbags.
While a straight hit between vehicles is bad enough, an off-center impact can be even more devastating for occupants. When the forces push a person into a spin or to the side, there is a chance that the victim will not be positioned to collide with the airbag. In these instances, the person may strike a hard surface causing severe injuries to their head or other parts of their body.
