Tragic Collision Kills 21-Year-Old on Interstate 20 in Aiken County, Georgia
AIKEN COUNTY, GA- Wrdw.com writes that a deadly crash killed a 21-year-old woman this week on Interstate 20. The crash was one of two reported during the same day on the interstate, and both led to delays in traffic.*
According to police reports, the rear tire of the victim’s vehicle blew out, causing her to lose control over her car. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. The driver was operating a van with several passengers, some of whom were injured in the collision. One of the surviving victims is in critical condition. The number of injured persons is still unclear.
No injury reports were made in connection with the other crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration writes that tire-related car accidents killed 738 people in 2017. Proper tire maintenance can help reduce the risk of these wrecks. When checking to ensure that tires are in good condition, look at the inflation. In addition to staying safe, properly inflated tires can save drivers up to eleven cents per gallon on their gas costs. Despite this, only about nineteen percent of drivers keep their tires properly inflated. Other tire maintenance includes rotating the tires and checking that they are aligned and balanced. Tires that are well cared for will last thousands of miles more than those that are neglected.
If your tire does blow out, try to maintain your speed and gradually decelerate. Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Try to stabilize and gain control over the car, and then steer in the direction of a safe place to pull off the roadway. While a blowout can be frightening and alarming, it is important to remain calm and get to a safe place from which to call for assistance.
