Tragic Crash Kills One, Injures Child on West Hampton Boulevard in Taylors, South Carolina

January 06, 2020

TAYLORS, SC- writes that a deadly crash took place on Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greenville County late last week. The county coroner identified the victim as a 42-year-old woman from Honea Path. The incident occurred in the late evening near Main Street.*

The victim was reportedly driving westbound on Main Street in a 2007 Honda sedan and then attempted to turn onto West Hampton Boulevard. An eighteen-year-old was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck northbound and struck the Honda.

The woman driving the Honda died at the scene. A child passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries and is being treated at the Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Reports did not include details regarding the nature or extent of the child’s injuries.

Police suspect that the victim failed to follow the traffic signal.

Drivers violate traffic signals far more often than many people would suspect. Intersections are hazardous in part because they rely on drivers to be attentive and follow the rules. Cars are crossing paths with vehicles traveling in all different directions, and there could be pedestrians and cyclists adding to the chaos. Left turns are notoriously risky as drivers must cross the path of oncoming vehicles.

There are plenty of alternatives to traditional intersections that could make driving far less dangerous. Roundabouts are one of the best ways to lower the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities at intersections. Studies indicate that fatal intersection accidents drop by an impressive 90 percent when roundabouts replace a crossroads. Safer road designs encourage drivers to slow down and to make fewer maneuvers that cause motorists to cross paths while heading in different directions.
