Crash Involving a Truck Causes Numerous Injuries in DeKalb County

January 03, 2020

DEKALB COUNTY, GA- writes that several people suffered injuries in a truck crash that took place on Interstate 85 in Georgia earlier this week. Three people sustained injuries, and several southbound lanes were closed for hours.*

When a collision involves a large truck, the consequences can be devastating. These vehicles outweigh smaller cars and other passenger vehicles by around twenty or 30 times. When a small vehicle and truck collide, the smaller vehicle will take more damage. In almost every deadly crash between a truck and a passenger car, the victim or victims were in the smaller of the two vehicles.

Drivers who operate large trucks are often working long shifts and maybe on the road for up to eleven hours a day. These drivers can experience fatigue behind the wheel that can make it difficult for them to remain alert and focused. Adding to the risks associated with large trucks is the fact that these vehicles are not easy to maneuver. Large trucks are unwieldy, and changing lanes or stopping quickly is not a realistic option.

When traveling in the vicinity of a large truck, it is important to remember that these automobiles are not nimble and cannot stop rapidly in emergencies.

While most vehicle occupant deaths declined in 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration writes that fatal crashes involving tractor-trailers increased. There is still hope that technological advances that are making occupant vehicles safer may also decrease large truck accidents. Technology in newer trucks may reduce blind spots and alert drivers when they need to apply the brakes. The features, which are already improving passenger car safety, could yield similar results for trucks.
