Tragic Gilchrist County Crash Kills One in High Springs, Florida

January 02, 2020

HIGH SPRINGS, FL- writes that a two-vehicle collision occurred late last week, leaving one person dead and another with severe injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.*

Reports indicate that a 62-year-old man was operating a Ford F250 pickup truck northbound on State Road 47 in the evening when his vehicle left the road and veered onto the shoulder. Two 28-year-old men were on the side of the road, recovering a wheelbarrow that had fallen from their vehicle. The men on the side of the road had parked a 2012 Dodge Ram with a trailer on the shoulder, and the Ford struck the rear of the Dodge.

The Ford then proceeded forward and rolled over multiple times before coming to rest on top of a fence. A 76-year-old man riding in the passenger seat of the Ford was thrown from the truck during the rollover.

Responders transported the 76-year-old man to the hospital via airlift, but he later died from his injuries. The driver also sustained serious injuries in the collision but is expected to survive. The two 28-year-old were not harmed.

Rollover collisions are highly deadly. While these crashes only account for a mere two or three percent of all vehicle accidents, they cause nearly one-third of all automobile-related fatalities. One of the aspects of rollovers that makes them so lethal is that occupants often are ejected from the vehicle. About three out of every four people ejected in a car crash dies as a result.

The best way to avoid being thrown from a car in a rollover accident is to use a seatbelt. Seatbelts prevent most vehicle ejections.
