Police Investigate Tragic Crash on Washington Road in Augusta, Georgia

December 18, 2019

AUGUSTA, GA- writes that a deadly crash occurred late last week at the intersection of Washington Road and Patriots Way. Reports identify the victim as a 50-year-old woman who was a passenger in one of the involved vehicles.*

Police say that the crash occurred when the vehicle the victim was traveling east and crossed over the center line where it struck another vehicle head-on. The woman did not have a seatbelt on at the time of the crash. Responders rushed the victim to the AU Medical Center, where medical providers declared her dead a short while later.

Seatbelts are the first line of defense for a car crash. Without a seatbelt, a person in a vehicle may collide with the interior of the vehicle, or be ejected from the car completely. Airbags are another important safety feature, but they can only work properly when a person is also using their seatbelt. By failing to use a seatbelt, a person traveling in a vehicle can be injured by the airbag rather than protected.

Statistics show that the majority of people in Georgia wear their seatbelts when driving. Georgia has a primary enforcement seatbelt law. In states with primary enforcement seatbelt laws, police can pull drivers over if the officer sees the person is failing to use a seatbelt, even in the absence of any other driving violation. Statistics indicate that states with primary seatbelt laws have, on average, a seatbelt usage rate of 90.6 percent versus states without such a law where 86.4 percent of people are buckling up.
