Driver Dies in Crash on Highway 178 in Picken County, South Carolina

December 16, 2019

PICKEN COUNTY, SC- writes that a driver died in a crash in Pickens County over the weekend. The collision occurred during the afternoon. According to the police the victim was traveling on a moped and tried to make a U-turn in the afternoon.*

When the moped driver attempted to slow for the U-turn, a 2013 Honda rear-ended the smaller vehicle.

Responders rushed the victim to the hospital, but the 59-year-old man died from the injuries he suffered in the crash.

Mopeds and other two-wheeled vehicles put riders at risk when it comes to severe collisions. Mopeds provide little protection for riders, but on top of that, they also can easily be overlooked by people traveling in bigger cars.

It is vital for drivers and moped or motorcycle riders to stay alert on the road. When riding a motorcycle, it is essential always to use a helmet as this is the piece of equipment that is most likely to save a motorcyclist's life. However, brightly color or reflective clothing is also helpful in ensuring that drivers see the smaller vehicle and its rider in the first place. The best-case scenario is, of course, not to get into a crash in the first place.

When it comes to rear-end accidents, the driver in back is almost always assumed at fault. Even if a vehicle slows down unexpectedly or improperly, the rear driver should have time to stop. If the driver does not have time to stop, this will often mean that he or she was traveling too fast for road conditions, too close to the other driver, or was not paying attention to the road ahead.
