Motorcyclist on Interstate 95 Dies in Crash Close to Melbourne, Florida

December 13, 2019

MELBOURNE, FL- writes that a man died in a motorcycle crash earlier this week on Interstate 95 close to Melbourne. The Titusville man was traveling in a 2006 Honda and struck the back of a 2020 Nisan Altima driven by a 20-year-old woman from Kissimmee.*

The woman was traveling in front of the motorcycle and slowed down because a driver merged out of the left lane due to roadway construction. The motorcyclist crashed into the back of the Altima as it slowed and then continued moving until it struck a construction vehicle that was parked on the interstate. The motorcyclist tragically died at the scene of the accident.

Motorcycles share the roads with cars, but the experience of a motorcyclist is far different from that of a driver in a four-wheeled vehicle.  Motorcycles require much more skill to operate than more stable four-wheeled cars and other vehicles, and riders are more vulnerable to imperfections on the roadway.  Adding to these risks is the fact that these vehicles are less visible than larger cars and trucks, making it more likely that they will be involved in an accident. These factors lead to 28 times greater risk of death for motorcyclists than drivers of passenger vehicles. Of course, there are steps riders can take to increase their safety. Since visibility is a factor that often leads to motorcycle accidents, it is important for bikers to wear reflective and bright clothing. Speeding also contributes to more than one out of every three fatal motorcycle crashes.  As such, motorcyclists can also lower their risk of death by traveling at a safe speed.
