Two-Vehicle Crash Traps Driver in Vehicle in Mountain City, Georgia

December 08, 2019

MOUNTAIN CITY, GA- writes that one vehicle flipped over in a car crash in Mountain City late last week. The two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of North Johnson and Ga. 15.*

Responders had to extract one of the victims from a damaged vehicle.

Rollover collisions lead to a high number of fatalities, even though they make up a small percent of total crashes. While some rollovers are caused in multiple-vehicle wrecks, many of these accidents only involve one car, or more likely, one SUV or pickup truck.

Vehicles that have higher centers of gravity have a greater chance of rolling when they take a curve to tight, clip a curve, or are involved in some form of vehicle accident. Modern SUVs are getting better ratings than previous models when it comes to rollovers, but still, the chances of flipping are higher in SUVs than in sedans and cars that are low to the ground.

About 69 percent of people killed in rollovers were not using a seatbelt. Seatbelts keep a person from being thrown around the vehicle if it flips, but also prevent a person from being ejected from a car. When a person is thrown from a vehicle, they have just a one in four chance of surviving the incident.

While cars are getting safer, many of the features only protect occupants if the occupants are where they should be in the vehicle. For instance, airbags are designed to protect a person who is in their seat, restrained by a seatbelt. Failing to use a seatbelt not only prevents the seatbelt from protecting a person, but it also significantly reduces the effectiveness of the airbags and other safety features.
