Car crash Shuts Down Lanes in Monroe County, Georgia

December 08, 2019

MONROE COUNTY, GA- reports that a crash on Interstate 75 led to multiple lane closures. The crash involved several vehicles that collided during the evening.*

Georgia has made efforts to reduce the number of car crashes that take place on its roads every year. Those efforts have proven at least somewhat successful as the total number of traffic deaths in the State dropped in 2017 and again in 2018. Overall, the improvements were relatively modest, with a drop of just over two percent in 2018. The total number of deaths still surpassed 1,500.

The State recently enacted a hands-free law that prohibits the use of any handheld electronic device while driving. While texting and driving is almost universally illegal in the United States, many drivers are distracted by their phones, even without texting. Now a growing number of states, including Georgia, outlawed any use of a handheld device by drivers covering a broader range of distractions and making it easier for law enforcement officers to identify those in violation of the law. Now a police officer need only see a person holding their phone rather than having to understand the purpose for which the driver was using that device.

Officials in Georgia credit the hands-free law for the reduction in fatalities on the road, but they also note that the improvements are not consistent across all types of crashes. Pedestrian accidents specifically are on the rise both in the State and across the country.

Again, many look to cell phones as a significant part of the problem. Drivers may be distracted, but pedestrians can be distracted as well. Walking while looking at a phone can put a person in harm's way.
