Atlanta Roadway Identified as High Risk for Drivers

November 29, 2019

CHATTOOGA COUNTY, GA- writes that Georgia State Route 48 is considered a dangerous path to take when driving from Huntsville to Atlanta. The roadway is often congested and seems to be getting more hazardous. The risks are likely to be even higher as the roads fill with holiday traffic.*

GPS systems may suggest the route to drivers as the fastest, but travelers are encouraged to think again about taking this path.

Locals say the road is becoming more crowded each year and that every day about 300 semis pass through as well.

Residents believe tourists are increasingly finding their way through on this route, adding to the traffic woes. Many blame GPS systems, which will often suggest the same path to drivers, leading to everyone following the same roads when traveling from one location to another.

Adding to the dangers is the fact that the road is winding and full of hills. Sometimes visibility is reduced where the roads intersect with the highway creating serious risks of high-speed collisions. The local sheriff says that he reported some of the spots to the Department of Transportation, stating that the areas should be marked with flashing lights.

Locals also point out the fact that many of the roads lack shoulders. A break down can leave drivers in an extremely vulnerable position- on the road with no safe way to exit their vehicle. If these drivers think they can sit and call for help from their broken-down car, they might find another problem because cell phone service in the region is unreliable.

The area is also prone to fog, which can lead to poor visibility. Police point out that any roadway will present dangers for drivers who speed or are distracted. Georgia 48 requires extra caution and drivers to stay alert, follow the speed limit, and remain focused.
