Truck Crashes on Interstate 75 in Bibb County, Georgia
BIBB COUNTY, GA- 13wmaz.com writes that tractor-trailer crashed in Bibb County earlier this week, leading to long delays for drivers heading both directions. The Georgia Department of Transportation reported that one person sustained injuries in the crash. The victim's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Georgia, like the rest of the country, experienced a decline in fatal car crashes in 2018. Officials credit the State's implementation of a hands-free law for the drop in deaths. However, the State still experienced more than 1,500 traffic-related fatalities last year, indicating that the State's efforts to improve traffic safety are far from over.
Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that the decline is likely thanks to improvements to crash prevention technology in many newer cars. This is likely part of what is happening in Georgia, as well.
Pedestrian deaths in the State rose, as they did across the United States. The programs and technology implemented to make vehicle occupants safer has not translated to making foot travel safer in the State and beyond.
Like pedestrian fatalities, deadly large truck crashes are increasing each year as well. Last year fatal accidents involving large trucks rose by about nine percent.
Many of the safety features that are being credited for making passenger vehicles safer are now coming standard in semi-trucks as well. Experts hope that the new technology will help decrease the number of people killed in collisions with these massive vehicles. For now, it is too early to tell whether the lane departure, automatic braking, and backup cameras are enough to turn the trend downward in upcoming years.
