Police Identify Victim of Fatal Augusta Crash in Augusta, Georgia
AUGUSTA, GA- Wrdw.com writes that police released the identity of the victim tragically killed in a crash on Peach Orchard Road. Police say the person killed was a 35-year-old man. Reports indicate that the driver was traveling northbound when, according to a witness, another vehicle cut him off. The man swerved out of the way, but in the process, struck a curb. The victim's vehicle rolled over ejecting the man.*
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the man to the Augusta University Medical Center, where staff pronounced him dead. The Georgia State Police are searching for information about the vehicle that cut the victim off.
Vehicle rollovers are incredibly deadly and are relatively likely in taller SUVs, vans, or pickup trucks. These cars are farther from the ground and have higher centers of gravity. One of the reasons that these types of accidents are so severe is that occupants of the vehicle have a high risk of being thrown out of the car in a rollover crash. When a person is ejected from a car, the risk of death is extremely high. Only about one in four people thrown from a vehicle live to tell the tale.
The best way to reduce the risk of being ejected in a car crash is to use a seatbelt at all times. Even with a seatbelt, there are times when ejections still occur, but the risk is significantly decreased. Failing to wear a seatbelt places a person at risk of ejection that is 30 times greater than if they buckled up.
While most people in the United States now use seatbelts, 43 percent of people who died in crashes were not using one at the time of their death.
