Multi-Vehicle Wreck on I-74 in Rowland, North Carolina

November 08, 2019

ROWLAND, NC. – According to an online news story posted at wmbfnews.com, a multi-vehicle wreck that happened on Interstate 74 in Rowland, North Carolina, led to one fatality. The accident appears to have occurred in a chain reaction and was related to a prior collision that had happened on the interstate.*

The accident took place in the late evening, between mile marker 205 and mile marker 206 on the westbound side of I-74. North Carolina State Highway Patrol and WMBF report that shortly before 10 p.m., traffic on the interstate was slowed or at a standstill due to a prior crash. The details surrounding this crash were not reported, and it is not clear how far traffic had become back up at the time.

Troopers say that a tractor-trailer headed west came to a stop because of the other crash and was rear-ended by an SUV. Following this collision, another westbound tractor-trailer crashed into the back of the SUV. The makes and models of the SUV and the two tractor-trailers were not reported.

Investigators have not yet identified what caused the accident and have not said whether they suspect any factors like distracted driving. Investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.

WMBF reports that the driver of the second tractor-trailer tragically died in the accident. No identifying information on this person has yet been released. WMBF further reports that the driver of the first tractor-trailer and the driver of the SUV sustained injuries in the crash. They were also not identified, and the extent of their injuries is not known. It is unclear if they went to hospitals for treatment.

The accident caused a closure on I-74 that lasted into the next morning. All lanes were finally reopened at approximately 7 a.m. the day following the crash.
