Several Polk Residents Involved in Fatal Crash on United States Highway 98 in Pasco County, Florida

A crash involving two tractor-trailers on U.S. 98 in Pasco County on Monday killed a Zephyrhills man. A semi driver from Winter Haven sustained minor injuries. Four other Polk residents escaped injury.

PASCO COUNTY, FL – According to an online news report at, a deadly accident occurred involving two 18-wheelers ended up causing an accident with another semi-truck and two other automobiles earlier this week at the intersection of Stanton Hall Drive and United States Highway 98.

According to a news release issued by the Florida Highway Patrol, a 53-year-old man from Zephyrhills, Florida was headed north on the two-lane U.S. 98 in the afternoon hours in a 2012 18-wheeler where for unknown reasons, he crossed over the center line and slammed into the driver’s side of a 2008 Mack truck that was headed southbound.  This vehicle was driven by a 41-year-old from Winter Haven, Florida.

The 53-year-old’s semi-truck, after the initial collision, then crashed into a 2014 Freightliner driven by a 48-year-old man from Adelanto, California, as well as a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck operated by a 33-year-old man from Lakeland, Florida. There was a four-year-old passenger in the pickup truck.

The impact of this multi-vehicle accident caused the pickup truck to slam into the 41-year-old’s Mack Truck.  A fifth automobile was involved int eh crash, which was a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by a 41-year-old woman from Auburndale, Florida.  There was a seven-year-old passenger in her vehicle.  The woman’s vehicle sustained serious damage in the crash.  

The Florida Highway Patrol indicates that the 53-year-old died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other drivers sustained injuries, per the Florida Highway Patrol news release.

It appears that all of the individuals involved in the accident were properly restrained.  Alcohol use is not suspected as being a factor in causing the accident.  No charges are pending at this time.
