Man Tragically Dies in Albany Pedestrian Accident in Albany, Georgia

November 08, 2019

ALBANY, GA – According to an online news report at walb.com, a pedestrian tragically died after being struck by a vehicle in the 3300 block of Sylvester Road, per the Dougherty County Coroner’s Office.*

Earlier this week, the coroner identified the victim as an 18-year-old male.  He had been walking back from the store with food in his bag to his residence that was located across the street from the store.  He had been wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident.

Per an online report at patch.com, the amount of pedestrians who died on United States roads in 2018 was the highest it has been since 1990, with over 30 deaths recorded in Georgia back in 2017, per the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA).  While pedestrian fatalities increased by four percent overall when compared to figures from the year prior, the amount of deaths actually decreased in 23 states and remained the same in two states for the first six months of 2018.

Per a report from the GHSA, it tabulated the amount of pedestrian fatalities in 2018 on both a national and state level for the first half of 2018.  The report indicates that 6,227 pedestrians died on United States roadways in 2018. In Georgia alone, there were 133 fatalities during the first six months of 2018, which represents a 32 percent increase when compared with figures from the first half of 2017.

Pedestrian deaths have increased over a ten-year period from 2008 to 2017 while the amount of other traffic-related fatalities went down by six percent, per the GHSA report.  Pedestrian fatalities as a percentage of total automobile accident deaths went up by four percent.
