Motorcyclist’s Camera Helps Lead to Arrest of Driver Who Fled Scene of Fatal Crash

November 05, 2019

BISMARK, ND- Ncadvertiser.com writes that a motorcyclist who was tragically struck and killed in a crash two months ago had a camera mounted on his vehicle that has helped police officers find and arrest the driver suspected of causing the crash and fleeing the scene. The crash took place in North Dakota last September on U.S. Highway 85. Based on reports, the motorcyclist attempted to avoid the other vehicle, which swerved into his lane. The victim’s attempt to avoid the crash was unsuccessful, and he suffered fatal injuries.*

The motorcyclist was identified as a 55-year-old man. Based on the motorcycle camera footage, the police have arrested a 27-year-old man and charged him with negligent homicide for the death of the motorcyclist. The driver’s license was suspended at the time of the incident, and he also was wanted in relation to drug charges.

Drivers who flee the scene of crashes are statistically more likely to be drunk, on drugs, not have a valid license, or to have a warrant out for their arrest. Drivers who are aware of the fact that they will be facing criminal charges, even if they were not at fault for an accident, are more likely to leave the scene and hope to escape law enforcement.

In many situations, drivers who flee crash scenes, even in severe and fatal accidents, are never caught or charged for their crime. Police often struggle to find the vehicle involved and to find the person who was driving, and to prove that that person was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. In some instances, there are no witnesses to report what the vehicle looked like or which direction it went. Law enforcement officers often must rely on witnesses to locate the responsible drivers as no other evidence may exist.
