UGA Student Tragically Killed in Wreck on Timothy Rd. in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia

ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at, a University of Georgia student was tragically killed in a vehicle wreck that took place on Timothy Road in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia. The driver of the other vehicle has reportedly been criminally charged in connection with the accident.*

The accident happened in the early morning at the location of the exit ramp to Timothy Road from the Loop. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department and The Red and Black report that around 6 a.m., a vehicle of unknown make and model was traveling on the Loop and tried to exit while traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers state that the driver was not able to negotiate the curve on the ramp, and ended up crossing the northbound lanes of Timothy Road. 

The vehicle then crashed over the divider in the roadway and entered the southbound lanes, where it struck a second vehicle of unknown make and model. It appears that after the accident, a witness took the driver of the first vehicle to a RaceTrac, then called the police. 

The Red and Black reports that the driver of the second vehicle was tragically killed in the crash. He was identified as a 20-year-old man from Leesburg, Georgia, and a student at UGA. In addition, The Red and Black reports that a passenger in the victim’s vehicle was injured and taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. This person was not identified, and the seriousness of his or her injuries is unknown. 

The driver of the first vehicle has been identified as a 51-year-old man from Hartwell, Georgia. The Red and Black reports that he has been charged with vehicular homicide, hit-and-run resulting in death, driving with a suspended license, driving too fast for conditions, and failure to maintain a lane.
