MACON, GA. – According to a news story reported online at wgxa.tv, sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in connection with a deadly pedestrian hit-and-run collision that occurred in Macon, Georgia. Authorities tracked down the suspect, who is also accused of trying to hide the vehicle he was driving when he hit the victim.*
The accident happened on a weekend day on Interstate 75 in Macon. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and WGXA report that a pedestrian was walking on the northbound side of the interstate and was struck by a vehicle near the overpass on Riverside Drive. It is unclear where specifically the pedestrian was walking prior to the crash. Following the accident, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
WGXA reports that the pedestrian was tragically killed in the accident. She was identified as a female, but no other information about her was reported.
Two days after the accident, the owner of a home in the 5700 block of Sardis Church Road contacted authorities saying he had returned home after spending several days away and found a vehicle he did not recognize parked in his yard with a tarp over it. Deputies went to the residence and inspected the vehicle, which they said had extensive front-end damage. Based on their examination of the vehicle, the deputies believed it was the one involved in the fatal accident on I-75.
Deputies traced the vehicle to a 64-year-old man from Jeffersonville, Georgia, and warrants were issued for the man’s arrest. Two days after the vehicle was discovered, the vehicle owner turned himself into authorities. WGXA reports that he has been charged with hit-and-run resulting in serious injury or death. He is reportedly being held in jail without bond. It is not clear when he will appear in court on the charges.
