School Bus Involved in Crash in Dansville, Georgia

October 17, 2019

DANSVILLE, GA- writes that a school and a dump truck were involved in a collision during the early morning hours while students were on board heading to school. The crash occurred at Highway 51 East and Jack Heard. The Dawson County Fire &EMS were sent to the scene of the accident after receiving reports that some of the students sustained injuries in the collision.*

Reports indicate that six students were sent to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where they were treated for their injuries.

Police are still working to determine the cause of the collision.

School bus accidents often receive a great deal of attention from news outlets. In reality, severe accidents involving these buses are rare. Statistically, students who take buses to school have a greater chance of getting there safely than the students who ride in family cars or who walk. School buses are designed with safety in mind and come equipped with protections that far exceed those of other similar vehicles.

Of course, there are occasionally serious accidents involving school buses. In many cases, the people who suffer the consequences are not those on the bus, but rather pedestrians, cyclists, or people traveling in smaller vehicles.

In spite of the high level of safety offered by school buses, many people are pushing to have these vehicles made even safer. One debate that is still ongoing around the country is whether school buses should be required to have seatbelts. While many argue that seatbelts would make students safer, especially in rollovers or side-impact crashes, the data to support this notion is limited. Some of the people opposed to seatbelts argue that the money required to make this change could be better spent on more effective safety measures.
