Hit-and-Run Driver Extradited Back to Florida
JACKSONVILLE, FL- Actionnewsjax.com writes that police arrested a driver who is accused of striking a man in Jacksonville Beach last July. The victim, a 22-year-old man, was tragically killed in the accident.*
The driver hit the two men who were on 2nd Street North at close to midnight. The other victim was severely injured and is still recovering from the accident. Reports indicate that the driver was traveling more than two times the speed limit when he struck the men. After hitting the victims, the driver continued to head down 2ndStreet North until he finally collided with a stop sign and tree, causing his vehicle to overturn.
When police found the driver, they suspected he was under the influence of alcohol. A blood test taken at the scene indicated that his blood-alcohol level was .228, far in excess of the .08 percent legal limit. The analysis also showed the presence of THC, meaning the driver had also used marijuana.
The driver was recently arrested in Ohio and extradited to Florida where he is now facing charges for driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, driving under the influence with damage, driving under the influence with injury, and for driving on a suspended license.
Drunk drivers and drivers who are not on valid licenses are more likely to flee the scene of crashes. Pedestrians are often the victims of hit-and-runs because an accident that is devastating to a person on foot can result in only minimal damage to a vehicle. When a driver leaves the scene after injuring a pedestrian, the pedestrian can be left without any way to receive emergency help or medical attention, therefore, increasing the risks to the victim.
