Pedestrian Suffered Severe Injuries in Accident with Truck in Dare County, Virginia
DARE COUNTY, VA- Outerbanksvoice.com writes that a pedestrian was seriously hurt in an accident that occurred overnight on S. Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills. The victim was reportedly a 39-year-old man from Richmond, Virginia. The victim was crossing US 158 from the west to the east side of the roadway. A 28-year-old man from North Carolina was driving a 2017 Mack tractor-trailer and heading northbound. Witnesses to the accident stated that the driver was traveling around 45 miles per hour, which is the speed limit in the area.*
The truck was approaching the intersection with Ocean Acres and had a green traffic signal when the victim tried to cross outside of the crosswalk. The driver saw the pedestrian and attempted to swerve but was unable to completely avoid striking the man. Reports indicate that the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the Norfolk General Hospital by helicopter. The condition of the victim has not yet been reported.
The road in the area of the crash was closed down for around two hours while the scene was investigated. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, and there are no charges being filed against him at this time.
Pedestrian crashes are more likely to take place during the nighttime hours when visibility is limited. In many cases, these accidents do involve alcohol. Drivers have an obligation to keep an eye out for pedestrians, but dark roadways can make this challenging. Better lighting near intersections is one possible way to reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents.
