The Consequences of Dump Truck Accidents
Dump trucks that carry heavy loads of material can pose a risk on roads and highways if they are involved in an accident. Any impact may cause heavy material to spill from the truck. Nearby vehicles and pedestrians may be at risk of sustaining injuries or death depending on the type and amount of material and whether the dump truck collided with a vehicle and/or pedestrian.
Dump trucks that spill material, but that are not involved in an accident can still be hazardous if material left on the roadway impedes other vehicles (such as a large amount of sand or boulders). If a vehicle must swerve to avoid a large object in the roadway that was left by a dump truck, that vehicle may be at risk of colliding with other vehicles or pedestrians.
As such, all drivers should be cautious when coming across a dump truck, such as leaving a significant amount of room between their vehicles and a dump truck. If a dump truck accident happens, any person involved may sustain severe injuries that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Concussions and other, more severe, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs);
- Neck and spinal cord injuries (some resulting in paralysis);
- Broken bones;
- Internal bleeding;
- Organ damage; and
