Woman Loses Arm in Mexico Dirt Buggy Accident
PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – As reported in an online news article published by www.news.com.au, a 26-year-old woman lost her right arm after being involved in a dirt buggy accident.*
A 26-year-old British woman was riding a dirt buggy near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico while on vacation when she was involved in a horrific accident. The woman had been riding the dirt buggy with a friend when the buggy slid on a wet surface, lost control, and flipped.
A portion of the buggy landed on the woman’s right arm, causing it to split in half. The woman stated that she remembers “looking down and [her] elbow was snapped the other way and [her] right arm was hanging on by a chunk of skin.”
Initially, the woman’s adrenaline prevented her from feeling the pain of the injury, but once the adrenaline wore off, the woman could feel the pain, and she came to the realization that part of her arm was detached from her body.
Once an ambulance arrived, the woman’s friend used her t-shirt to tourniquet the injured woman’s arm, which doctors say saved the woman’s life, as she may otherwise have bled to death. The woman stated that on the way to the hospital, she could feel herself dying and that she was given a shot of some medication that woke her back up.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the woman was sedated because, in her words, she was “hysterical” from the incident. The woman then underwent surgery, and doctors were not able to save her arm. The only way to save the woman’s life was to amputate her right arm completely.
The woman’s family had been told that the woman had “died on the operating table for a little while,” but the woman ultimately survived, although without her arm. Because the woman was right-handed, she will have to learn how to write with her left hand and to adapt to a new way of life.
