Fatal Pedestrian Accident Leads to Multiple-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 20 in Atlanta, Georgia
ATLANTA, GA – According to an online news report at ajc.com, a fatal pedestrian crash and a multiple-vehicle caused a massive traffic backup on Interstate 20 in Atlanta for several hours during rush hour earlier this week.*
A man sustained fatal injuries after being hit by a vehicle while walking on Interstate 20 close to Lowery Boulevard, per an Atlanta police spokesperson. The pedestrian is identified as a 37-year-old male from Decatur, Georgia, who was attempting to go across the interstate in the early morning hours. He was struck by a motorist close to the median wall.
This accident led to a multiple-vehicle crash that involved six other vehicles as drivers attempted to avoid the pedestrian accident and collided into one another. One man involved in the accident was transported to a local hospital due to complaining of pain, per the Atlanta police.
Both of the directions of Interstate 20 were blocked off at Lowery Boulevard while officials worked the scene of the crashes, per the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. The westerly lanes were opened once again before 8:30 a.m. The easterly lanes were reopened right before 9:00 a.m., as provided by the Traffic Center.
The Georgia State Patrol is assisting the Atlanta police in investigating the accidents. It is not clear as to whether any other individual was injured. The identity and ages of the motorists involved in the vehicular accident have not been released to the public. There are no further details on the accidents at this time.
