Proposal Offered for Bus Drivers in Muscogee County, Georgia

October 20, 2018

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA- According to the ledger-enquirer.com, there have been recent proposals to change bus driver earnings and responsibilities. Representatives John Thomas and Frank Meyers suggested a minimum pay increase for school bus drivers. The rate suggested was $17 an hour, which is a 16 percent increase over the current minimum pay rate of $14.66 an hour.*

The Thomas and Meyers proposal would also require a one dollar an hour raise for drivers for every year that they worked for the district. The rate would be capped at $22 an hour. There would also be bonuses for drivers, including $500 as a signing bonus after 6 months working for the district and another $500 for one year of service. The proposal failed, with Thomas and Meyers being the only members out of 9 to vote in favor.

Another representative, Vanessa Jackson, who abstained in the vote, offered her own proposal on Monday. Similar to the Thomas/Meyers proposal, Jackson’s would increase pay for drivers. The Jackson proposal would allow for pay increases that would take place in stages. The maximum hourly rate under Jackson’s plan would be $21.69.

The proposal includes other additions to the bus service as well. Buses would have “How’s My Driving” stickers that would allow people to report on the bus driver’s actions, the drivers would have uniforms, monitors would be added to each bus to handle discipline while drivers focused on the road.

Representatives argued against the proposal based on complaints about the high costs of implementation, that the proposal should have been presented when the budget was being formulated and because it only offered increased pay for drivers and would not be fair for other employees.
